Benefits of journaling for overthinkers

Have you often wondered if you’re an overthinker? If you are a highly sensitive person, there is a high chance you are.

I know personally, my thoughts never quit. Over the years, it has caused extra stress, anxiety, uncertainty, doubt and perfectionism.

 

It is common for overthinkers (empaths & HSP’s) to often feel:

  • fatigue

  • negative self talk

  • lack of focus

  • social anxiety

  • physical tension

  • time pressure

  • isolation

  • rumination

  • emotional exhaustion

 
 

It's important to note that not all overthinkers will experience all of these feelings, and some may be more pronounced than others. Overcoming chronic overthinking often involves cultivating mindfulness and practicing self-compassion.

It can also help track your progress as you work through your issues. Journaling reduces stress and anxiety by providing an outlet for built-up and overwhelming emotions.

It's important to note that the benefits of journaling can vary from person to person, and consistency is key. It also needs to be in a way that feels right for you. I think that is what I love about journaling as well…there are no rules. All you really need to do is find a technique that works for you. Some helpful tips:


  1. Choose the Right Journal: Find a journal that resonates with you – whether it's a physical notebook or a digital app. Choose one that you're comfortable using regularly.

  2. Set Aside Time: Dedicate a specific time in your day for journaling. It could be in the morning to set intentions or in the evening to reflect on the day.

  3. Create a Comfortable Space: Find a quiet and comfortable place to write where you can focus and be free from distractions.

  4. Start Small: Begin with a short writing session, maybe just 5-10 minutes. You can gradually increase the time as you get more accustomed to the practice.

  5. Write Freely: Don't worry about grammar, spelling, or structure. Let your thoughts flow naturally, even if they seem disorganized at first.

  6. Choose Your Focus: Decide what you want to journal about – your day, emotions, goals, dreams, or a specific topic that's on your mind.

  7. Express Emotions: Write about how you're feeling. Use your journal as a safe space to express your emotions honestly and without judgment.

  8. Set Goals: Write down your short-term and long-term goals. Regularly revisiting them can help you stay focused and motivated.

  9. Practice Gratitude: Dedicate a section of your journal to things you're grateful for. This can help shift your focus toward positivity.

  10. Be Consistent: Try to write daily, but if that's not feasible, aim for a few times a week. Consistency helps you build the habit.

  11. Experiment: Explore different journaling styles like free-writing, bullet journaling, gratitude journaling, or art journaling. Find what resonates with you.

  12. Silence Your Inner Critic: Don't judge what you write. Remember, this is for your benefit, and you're not aiming to impress anyone.

  13. Review and Reflect: Occasionally look back on your previous entries. It can help you track your progress, notice patterns, and see how you've grown.

  14. Experiment with Prompts: Use writing prompts to spark your creativity and encourage deeper self-reflection.

  15. Practice Self-Compassion: Treat yourself kindly through your journaling journey. Be patient and understanding with yourself.
