10 Habits of the healthiest humans on the planet…
Living well, for a long time.
That’s the ultimate goal, isn’t it?
I know you’ve heard this many, many times…but there is no magical formula or pill that will make us feel awesome and healthy to the ripe old age of 100.
The “secret” to living a healthy life isn’t a secret at all. It’s the habits and tasks we do DAILY.
It’s:
How we spend our mornings.
Our evening routines.
Creating clean, uncluttered, healthy living spaces.
Removing ourselves from the digital world when we need it.
Eating foods that are perfect for our own body.
Quality sleep.
Our relationships.
Resting and listening to our bodies.
Our mindset.
Being mindful as much as we can.
The way in which we keep moving in our day.
Exercising for wellness rather than vanity.
Expressing gratitude every single day.
Being kind, often, especially to those who need it most.
Living a balanced life, (but even doing this in moderation as needed).
So, as you can see, living well is all those things.
It’s quite the balancing act, honestly.
It’s also all about taking daily, small, consistent steps to living well for a long time. Let me give you an example from teaching yoga and one of my most dedicated students:
Let’s call her Joanna. Joanna is 65 ish, slight arthritis and is also a patient of my husband’s.
I was introduced to Joanna about 5 years ago by another student, who is her daughter. I only found out after we met that she was a patient of Mark’s.
I started teaching the two of them, with a couple other ladies in Joanna’s basement. No one, (except the daughter) had ever done yoga before.
I think the classes lasted consistently for about 6 months and then people started missing, cancelling and finally we stopped running the sessions.
Joanna, however, kept practicing wherever I taught, very consistently. RARELY missing class. In the beginning Joanna moved extremely slowly because of her arthritis. She only practiced her planks on her knees and moved extremely cautiously through her Sun Salutations.
Fast forward to today, where we practice in my home studio , Joanna RARELY misses class.
She went from:
Planks on her knees to holding planks now for 2-3 minutes.
Slowly and painfully practicing Sun Salutations and vinyasas to moving soooo gracefully with limited pain.
Barely being able to sit comfortably with legs out to touching her toes no problem.
Fidgeting often in savasana to almost falling asleep now.
I believe one of the biggest issues today is that online we see these buff, strong, happy, adventurous people…”living their best life” on social media and compare ourselves because we feel like crap and think our life sucks, (it probably doesn’t, lol).
Stop this now.
The happiest, healthiest people on earth (in the Blue Zones) don’t compare themselves and are NOT consumed with scrolling social media.
They do the simple, daily, feel good, healthy things daily.
Now, that’s the secret to happiness.
Be like Joanna! Start where you are in the basement and just keep at it. Commit. Do it daily. Just don’t quit.
