A day in the life of an oiler.

Reaching for oils first takes practice. I totally understand, you’re a busy person and sometimes it’s just easier to grab something from the grocery store or drug store when you’re out and about. Let me share a typical day for myself and my family.

A typical day where oils are used around my home…

+In the morning, when I get up to get my coffee, I diffuse right away. Typically a blend like: Citrus Bloom, Citrus Bliss, Cheer or OnGuard.

+Sip my coffee, and then have a smoothie or oatmeal and then my supplements, (which include a capsule of 1 drop Tumeric essential oil + 1 drop black pepper + a drop of fractionated coconut oil). Sometimes we have the Tumeric Dual Chamber capsules, so I take them if they are in the house.

+My hands and wrists have been sore lately, so I apply a lotion base I created with plain lotion and a custom blend I made that’s not minty: frankincense, copaiba, ginger, black spruce, black pepper and lemon.

+In the shower I add 2 drops rosemary to my shampoo.

+After getting out, I apply a small pump oil blend of FCO with frankincense, patchouli and orange and rub it around my breasts, legs, armpits and belly.

+My whole face routine, (which is super simple), includes essential oils and skin care products from doTERRA.

+I ALWAYS roll the Rose Touch under my face cream, (between brows, around lips, and forehead).

+Brush my teeth with doTERRA toothpaste, scrape my tongue and use their mouthwash.

+For “perfume”, I usually use the Beautiful blend, or magnolia or the Motivate Touch blend.

+When running low on energy, I may take a Mito2Max tablet, Peppermint beadlets or inhale from the bottle of Peppermint (those are all handy in my kitchen).

+Throughout the day, when we go to the bathroom, we are using a homemade room spray, (I change the oils when the seasons change) and wash our hands with our diy foaming hand soap. Our favourite blends to add: Citrus Bloom, Abode, Air-x, lavender + lemon, wild orange + frankincense.

+In the laundry room, I keep a bottle of lavender, lemon, tea tree and clove. Depending on the type of load, I will add a couple drops of oil to the unscented laundry soap or even my doTERRA laundry soap. I almost always add a couple drops to a damp cloth in the dryer with the clothes.

+In my office, at my desk I have an inhaler I made with rosemary + lemon to inhale periodically or when I meditate. I am looking right now and I also have the “Breathe” stick because I have seasonal allergies and I rub that into my chest as needed. And my bottle of melissa too, just for breathing because it’s my #1 favourite oil at the moment, (save your points and use them for this oil). I have a small bowl of rollerballs with my own blends, all labeled and ready to use as needed.

+I keep a beeswax candle on my desk and burn it when I am working. Sometimes I’ll add a drop or two of lavender or peppermint in the wax.

+I think the handiest tool we have in some of the rooms around our house and everyone uses it, is the plain lotion. My family is so good at customizing and asking which oils to add to it when they have specific issue. Camryn: dry legs, so she adds patchouli and lavender. Conor: digestion, so he adds ZenGest to the lotion and rubs on his belly. Caidyn: stretch marks from working out, so he adds helichrysum and copaiba and frankincense. Me: tired and sore hands, (my typical soothing, muscle blend). Mark: he LOVES Citrus Bliss, so we made him a custom lotion to always have with him at work for his super dry hands, (he washes them 30x/day).

+A bottle of lemon is kept next to the kitchen sink for pretty much everything: to add to baking soda and a splash of dish soap and water to clean the sink and make it sparkly, to clean sticky labels, to add to water and baking soda when letting the veggies sit before rinsing and prepping. (so many ways to use lemon oil around the house, so we have at least 3 bottles going at all times)

+By my afternoon, my diffusers around the house usually run out, (bedrooms and other rooms may not be going, but the kitchen pretty much always is). Afternoon diffuser blends are usually whatever I have in my kitchen, blends like: Balance, Hygge, Northern Escape, Peace, or any of my doTERRA Yoga Blends. Sometimes a simple lavender and eucalyptus is perfect too.

+Bedtime routine is similar to the morning except I add frankincense, “neat” to a few “sun spots” on my face. Rose Touch on my face again and then my cream.

+For sleep, oils are almost a non-negotiable. I have my relaxing oils by my bed and a pump full of fractionated coconut oil. I add a couple drops of essential oil to a pump of FCO and rub on my heart and lower legs and feet. My go-to blend is simply Balance. You can use Peace, Serenity, Frankincense + Litsea + Melissa, or simply lavender + Roman Chamomile.

+Sometimes we diffuse in our bedroom, but not all the time.

Here are a few examples of where we reach for oils first, even though, they may not be used every day, (I have added daily supplements that have oils in them, made specifically for therapeutic reasons too):

  • for a cut finger, after it is washed, we add a drop of helichrysum (also known as nature’s band-aid).

  • for a bad cyst, add a drop of tea tree and copaiba.

  • for relaxing baths, add oils to jojoba oil and epsom salts (lavender, vetiver, orange, Serenity, Peace, Passion, Adaptiv, Roman Chamomile).

  • if dealing with anxiety, (I get mild panic attacks around my time of the month), I inhale Adaptiv, roll it on my wrists, back of the neck and take the capsules.

  • Deep Blue rub is a staple for my active boys. The also love the new Deep Blue stick (not greasy and really quick application).

  • we make our own lip balms and salves, (but sometimes I cheat and add a few doTERRA balms to my order).

  • 3 of my kids use the whole acne support line, full of essential oils (wash, cream & rollerball).

  • AromaTouch for giving each other massages, (if you diffuse this blend, it smells like a spa).

  • Have bad breath? Add 2 drops Peppermint or Spearmint to a capsule with FCO or pop a few Peppermint Beadlets.

  • Last, but not least, TerraZyme. These are the best digestive enzymes, ever. If you ever have tummy pains, I challenge you to take two and then notice your stomach ache go away. Nope, not kidding you.

I hope this helps inspire you to look through your own oil collection! I added products and supplements just in case you even have some of these things in your cupboard as well.
