A list of 15 ways to use essential oils in your house:)

So, I wanted to share this list quite a while ago…but for some reason I’ve been holding back and just saved it in my files. And then I forgot that I even wrote it.

Maybe I was waiting for the perfect time. Maybe I just forgot.

Why would I want to share this? Well, one of my pet peeves is when someone shares their love of oils, gets you to purchase a bunch of oils, (or you buy them online or from the store)…and then you let them sit there.

You just don’t know where to start.

You probably know lavender is for calming…but did you also know it’s great for soothing skin irritations and inflammation?

You may also have heard Tea Tree is a great anti-fungal, but did you know it does wonders for your acne issues?

So…if you are here, right now reading this, I am assuming you are a little curious as to what it is like to live a life with oils:)

I hope this helps you a little!

Upon waking up…

  1. I head downstairs for my cup of coffee, but also pour a big glass of water with 1 drop of Slim & Sassy, (Designed to help boost your metabolism and manage hunger cravings, it’s a blend of  Grapefruit, Lemon, Peppermint, Ginger, and Cinnamon)

  2. Add a few oils to the diffuser before calling the sleeping kiddos, (usually something simple like peppermint and wild orange, Citrus bliss, or Motivate)

  3. If there are tons of colds and flues going around, typically during the winter, I will have made an OnGuard hand sanitizer or rollerball for my kids to keep handy at school.

  4. After everyone is gone, I usually sit down and plan my day, write down goals, post for my pages etc. Just before this, I add 2 drops of Balance on my heart and breathe, (this is hopefully after ALL 4 kids get to school). Balance is my go to blend for centering and calming. I NEVER do not have it in our house. I have a bottle in my purse, by my bed, an extra rollerball handy by my computer.

  5. Because I work from home, most of the time, showering is usually just before lunch, (don’t judge) lol  Typically, I use:

  • doTERRA shampoo & conditioner

  • homemade sugar scrub (lemon is my favourite, I know, simple)

  • a soap bar made by one of my friends, full of yummy oils

  1. Exiting the shower I oil myself down with a blend made with fractionated coconut oil and keep in a mason jar with a pump. This blend: lavender, ylang ylang, Frankincense & wild orange.

  2. Before drying my hair, I add the Root to Tip Serum by doTERRA, (this was one of those products that I got for free with my points, but now always get, it’s one of my favourite products for sure).

  3. Brush my teeth with OnGuard toothpaste and use a home made mouth wash (OnGuard, aloe vera, baking soda & distilled water)

  4. If it’s laundry day, I add a few drops of lemon to the whites, tea tree to gross, stinky clothes and lavender to my wool dryer balls.

  5. For cleaning, well, it’s ALL essential oil based around here for sure! (if you are to start experimenting and learning to use essential oils, cleaners are a great place to start).  OnGuard cleaner concentrate for easy mixing of all-purpose sprays. Lemongrass and tea tree to clean my yoga mat. Tea tree to clean moldy window ledges. Cassia and wild orange in baking soda for sprinkling and freshening up mattresses, carpets and rugs. Lemon to remove labels from plastics and glass. A blend of Borax, vinegar, lemon and lavender for toilet bowl cleaner.

  6. When the bathrooms get stinky, everyone in the house uses our home made bathroom “poo poo” sprays! The combinations are endless Simple and fresh: lemon and peppermint or Cheer or OnGuard or even Douglas Fir with Citrus Bliss, (this smells like root beer).

  7. In my purse, on the go, I will roll on a favourite “personal scent”. A perfume made with essential oils can pretty much be anything that makes you feel good, happy, and is pleasing to those around you. Blends like Geranium + wild orange. Or patchouli, grapefruit + ylang ylang. Or even a simple citrus  blend of wild orange, lime + tangerine.

Handy in my purse as well: homemade lip balm, (lavender, orange and helichrysum), peppermint beadlets for car sickness, OnGuard & Easy Air cough drops. I also have a tube of Correct-x in my purse and in our First Aid kit in the kid’s bathroom, (this replaces Polysporin, can be used for really dry, chapped, infected lips, cold sores, cuts etc)

  1. Car diffuser, (our family loves peppermint, spearmint or tangerine).

  2. For aches and pains  we keep Deep Blue oil and rub handy. I am pretty sure we have around 3 tubes of the rub floating around in bags and bedrooms! Deep Blue Polyphenol complex is also kept handy:) This supplement is extremely effective, (it’s a supplement that consists of polyphenol extracts of frankincense, turmeric, green tea, ginger, pomegranate, and grape seed, and is designed to provide soothing support to aching muscles).

  3. Lastly, I went around my house and found a few other products that I love, perhaps could make them on my own, but probably not as good as doTERRA: Body Butter, (soooo heavenly, and not greasy at all, smells divine). Mud Mask, (this is the bomb).

So, as you can see, our lives revolve around the use of essential oils…and we wouldn’t have it any other way!!

That’s it!! How we use essential oils in our home…on a daily basis…in a nutshell:)

5 Awesome ideas for gift giving at the end of the school year!!

Hi there!! If you joined my “live” this past Wednesday, we went over some very simple, inexpensive, thoughtful gifts to share with your teachers, coaches and support staff this year.

Did you miss the live? Every Wednesday, NOON, (well, sometimes I’m a tad early or late), I try and get on to share whatever is on my mind. Mostly about essential oils, clean living, make + take ideas, lifestyle tips etc.

So, why do I encourage you to make your own gifts, especially while incorporating your essential oils?

  1. It will save you money.
  2. It will save you time.
  3. It is empowering to make and share home made goodies.
  4. Handcrafted, thoughtful gifts are almost always very well received.

Here are my 5 favourite gifts to give. I’m sharing these as year end gifts, but once you get the basic supplies, and always have them on hand, you’ll find you just start sharing them for tons of events, birthdays, housewarming gifts, mother and father’s days, baby and bridal showers!!

Here they are:

Rollerballs

Sugar Scrubs & Bath Salts

Foaming Hand Wash

Room/Bathroom Sprays

Toilet Bombs

Rollerballs. I know you may not have these on hand, but if you have essential oils, you really need should have them! They stretch the life of your oils, make it safe to share the benefits of your oils with your kiddos, make it convenient to carry remedies with you at all times!

They come in 5 ml and 10 ml bottles, typically you will find amber glass rollers, (but they come in all sorts of colours these days). All you do is add your oils to the bottom, top off with a carrier oil, (typically grapeseed or fractionated coconut oil). The recipes below are for 10 ml rollerballs.

4 of my favourite recipes for teachers:

Sugar Scrubs & Bath Salts. Now these are super easy, and I am guessing you probably already have most ingredients in your pantry. To keep costs low…use the tiny mason jars and make labels for the top at www.myavery.com

To make the base for any sugar scrub, (amounts are for the small mason jars, 1/2 cup):

  1. 1/2 cup of traditional brown or white sugar. I have used granulated, organic cane sugar from Costco too!
  2. 2-3 Tbsp fractionated coconut, grapeseed, avocado, olive, or sweet almond oil.

To your base you can add a tiny bit of honey or even vanilla extract.

And then add your essential oils. Blends to try:

  • lemon & peppermint
  • lavender & eucalyptus
  • wild orange & Frankincense
  • lavender & grapefruit
  • ginger & orange
  • rosemary & eucalyptus
  • douglas fir, wild orange, lime and lemon

Bath salts, well, they are super simple! Basically, fill your jar with epsom or pink Himalayan salts and then add your oils. Wonderful, relaxing oils to soak in:

  • lavender & frankincense
  • lavender & cedarwood
  • lavender & wild orange & cedarwood
  • bergamot & cypress
  • Serenity (doTERRA’s calming blend)

Foaming Hand Wash. Now, this is a really great gift! One of my absolute favourites to make and share. The best part is when I share the recipe and people realize how easy it really is to make…AND how much money they will save by making their own. For the foaming bottle, you can save and re-use what you already have, or grab some clear or white ones here: EO Nation, an online oil supply company out of Alberta!

Below is a recipe card I shared in one of my classes. You should be able to right click on the picture, save and print out:o)

Room Sprays. I love customizing the labels and sharing this little gift! Typically, you will only need a 2 oz, amber, glass bottle to make a cute, little room spray. If you want to make it into a bathroom spray…that’s awesome too! This year I am actually giving these to the teachers, plus a small Norwex cloth…so fun!

Again, I grab my mister spray bottles from EO Nation

Basic room/bathroom/mister spray recipe, 2 oz bottle:

  • 1 tsp epsom salts
  • 1/2 Tbsp witch hazel (or vodka)
  • 15-20 drops of essential oil

Oil combos to try:

Toilet Bombs. Now, what makes these fun and cute is the container you find to put them in! I love glass jars, with lids from places like Superstore and Homesense. Add a pretty ribbon and some instructions on the lid…so awesome:)

The recipe is quite basic. If you’ve made bath bombs, VERY similar…but less finicky. You can totally just mold these into little balls with your hands, but if you have a cute silicon mold, all the better. I grabbed a bunch from IKEA the last time we were in the city.

Recipe:

1 Cup baking soda

1/2 cup citric acid

1 Tbsp hydrogen peroxide

15-20 drops of essential oils, (use oils or blends that are more anti bacterial, anti viral) Eg. clove and orange, tea tree and lemongrass, OnGuard (doTERRA’s protective blend)

Witch hazel, (in a little mister spray bottle)

Directions:

  1. Add baking soda and citric acid in a bowl, mix well.
  2. Slowly add hydrogen peroxide, mix in well.
  3. Next, add your essential oils of your choice.
  4. Spray the witch hazel, 8-10 mists at a time to the mix. When you are able to hold the mixture together in a ball, without it crumbling, your mix is ready. I love to simply add to silicon molds, (smaller shapes than you would typically use for bath bombs). In my picture below are little flower molds. Typically, you don’t need to add any colour, best to keep them natural, as toilet bombs are used to deodorize and sanitize your toilet bowl after flushing.

So…I hope that gets you started making and sharing your own goodies!!

And if you need to get your hands on some essential oils, click here to either grab a few retail…or click the “join & save” for wholesale oil prices!!

(A little side note, if you are super interested in oils and would like to join me on this health/make + take journey…a wholesale membership has way more benefits than simply getting awesome oils for rocking prices. EG. free classes, support from me, access to an exclusive, private FB group, team events, wholesale diffusers)

BUT….if you simply have questions, and would like to connect via ZOOM or in person, please don’t hesitate to contact me and we’ll set up a tea/coffee/wine date!!

A list of the best oil accessory companies around!! (Kellie’s top 15) :)

I’ve been wanting to put this together forever!!!

Here is a list of 15 of my favourite oil accessories companies in Canada and the United States. It’s here on the blog, make sure you bookmark it for easy access. I have also added the file below so you can easily print it out as well.

EO Nation. This is my regular “go to” company because she has the basics, and they are always high quality and packaged really well! Shipping is reasonable and she is Canadian. I definitely do most of my ordering from here!!

https://eonation.co/

EO Tools. I love this company! I get lots of my make and take labels and handouts from here. They are from the US, but the service rocks and the labels and additional material has yet to disappoint.

https://eo.tools/

MEB. My Essentials Business, proudly Canadian. These guys are out of Toronto, so shipping takes a little longer, but they have one of the best selections in North America. If you are looking for a few really good oil books, they have a great stock! Sticker tops, rollerballs, containers etc.

https://mebcanada.ca/page/homepage

Pure Life Balance. Out of Sherwood Park, this company is owned by a doTERRA diamond, Kim Smadis. Besides having a wonderful blog, very pretty website and being an extremely inspiring lady, she does have a pretty good online shop. You can even order online and pick up in Sherwood Park if you like as well, (I’ve done that one time, it was perfect).

https://purelifebalance.ca/collections/all

Oil Life. This is another American company, but if you are looking for business tools and some really cool books and materials for learning more about essential oils, I highly recommend browsing this website!! It’s pretty beautiful too:o)

https://www.oillife.com/

Aroma Tools. You can get EVERYTHING here!! It is another US site, but it is totally worth checking out. I’ve ordered books and business building materials from here, but seriously, they have everything. It is a doTERRA affiliated site too.

https://www.aromatools.com/

Rollerball Make and Take. This is exactly how it sounds…an online store for everything you need to set up and host your own make and take classes and parties. They have some pretty awesome labels! I have NOT ordered from here because I found the shipping quite expensive, but if you had a friend who wanted to share the shipping, it would be totally worth it.

http://www.rollerballmakeandtake.com/

Share Oils. Another oil accessory website, but this one is a little smaller, and I love their layout of their website.  They have a unique collection of containers that are not available on most of the other sites.

https://www.shareoils.com/collections/containers

Essential Oil Style. This is just a really fun company who has the most awesome oil clothing line, plus all sorts of other “oil swag”. Their marketing and images they create are super funny too!! (I share them quite often)

https://www.essentialoilstyle.com/

Wood and Oils. This company is pretty unique and cool. Lots of really intriguing oil stands. Based out of California, they don’t have a website, but here’s their etsy page:

www.etsy.com/shop/WoodAndOils

Priya Design Co. As some of you may know, this is the website of Kim Staples. If you are looking for the most beautiful diffusing malas on the planet…here they are!! Looking for a custom bracelet or mala? Check out Kim’s website:

http://priyadesignco.com/

Your Oil Tools. Another oil tools website based out of the States, but has some unique products of their own. Worth checking outJ

https://www.youroiltools.com/

Got Oil Supplies. If you are looking for a brilliant, handy purse or bag to carry your oils in, this is the company!! You have to make sure you go and check out this site!!!

https://www.gotoilsupplies.com/

The EOS Lifestyle. I like this company because they have some pretty cool, customizable business tools. You can even order business cards from here. My favourite, though, (even though I have never ordered them), is their BAMBOO roller balls! I think their other rollerballs are one of the most classy looking on the market.

https://eos.life/products/eos-luxe-roller-bottles-mix-match?variant=35277062790

Whimsy and Wellness. I just love this little company for its super cute, very simple labels! If you love GOLD, you’ll love their stuff. If you are an Instagrammer, you’ll love their IG feed!

https://whimsy-and-wellness.myshopify.com/

So, that’s about it! I honestly love all these companies, but when it comes to the basics, I stick to EO Nation because she’s a mom…just like many of us. Her shipping is fast, her service rocks, and her prices are comparable to all the other companies out there!!

Have I missed anything?? If so, let me know in the comments below!!!

What’s your pain telling you?? Is it a sign of something a little more complex?

How are you doing?

I’m doing quite well…besides you know…the nagging pain, (of which I am going to talk briefly about in this post). :o)

First thing…I want to let you know how much I appreciate you here. I am grateful for the fact you are taking time out of your busy life to click on this link and peek at what I am writing. That being said, I will make it as short and sweet as possible, but hopefully share enough that you’ll find some of this useful!

So…pain. I have been in tons of pain lately. It’s in my right lower leg and foot. It’s the kind of pain I figured my husband could treat and “fix”. For those of you who may not know, he is a soft tissue, chiropractic, sports therapist. I know I am a little biased, but the man is a magician. He’s super talented, and a very compassionate practitioner.

However, you know that saying about the carpenter’s wife having the house that’s falling apart? Yep. That’s me and my body. I think it’s because his treatments are not the most comfortable, pretty painful actually. So, I neglect getting treatedL And I ALWAYS leave my injuries until they are super bad.

Well, the pain was getting so bad I couldn’t even walk when getting up in the morning without my cushy sandals on my feet.

Last weekend Mark went away and the pain was so bad, I figured we should make a plan to treat me the following week. In the meantime, I thought I would also be a little proactive and look at my diet.

DIET. PAIN. What do they really have in common??? A LOT actually.

Now, without going into all the boring details, (because I am determined to not lose you), I do have a family history of rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory “issues”, (physical and psychological), I do also know I have a sensitivity to dairy products, (casein from cow’s milk specifically). We have access to Meridian labs food allergy testing in our clinic, so I’ve been tested 3 times already.

So, while Mark was away last weekend, I really watched my diet. I pulled up all my health coaching files, browsed my notes, meal plans and books. Doing this got me a little inspired, and made a plan. Now, I will tell you, you cannot make all your symptoms magically go away in 1-2 days, but it’s pretty amazing how the body adjusts in a short period of time.

To make myself clear, really clear, I am not saying diet alone is the “cure all”, and either are essential oils…or exercising all by itself. Being well and healthy is a whole approach. What I am saying is there is a direct correlation between diet and INFLAMMATION.

In the next 3 days of no:

  • Sugar
  • Dairy (yogurt, cheese, modified milk products, whey etc)
  • Processed meats

my pain was significantly reduced. This was without soft tissue treatment. No laser. No shockwave. No yoga. No essential oils, (Deep Blue, specifically). Just a change in my diet.

While Mark was away, I texted him that it was crazy how my foot, heel and lower leg was way better and this is what he wrote back, (I could sense the sarcasm and eye rolling in his text):

“The only reason we feel pain…To change our behaviours that are detrimental to our life. Healthcare only really exists because humans don’t listen to ourselves or try and rationalize it away for some other ‘nobler cause’.

He also said, “Keep eating this way and see if any other “itis’s” go away. It is is just our fancy way of telling patients they have low grade constant inflammation. And we know where all that starts”.

Do you know where it all starts? Have you heard the saying, “It all starts in the GUT”.

So, that is why, when we are in pain…perhaps we should take a better look at our gut. Diet is where we should begin regardless of the disease or injury you may be affected by, (really, it takes some discipline, but is well worth it).

That’s where I wanted to go with this. Yes, I still have a bit of pain. And yes, I still need to be treated due to overcompensating for the pain in my right foot, I have strained other ligaments, muscles and tendons so they have tightened and shortened. So…soft treatment, (as much as I loathe it), is inevitable.

But, seeing the change in my pain, (because of the removal of certain foods that cause an anti-inflammatory response within my body), PREVENTION is the key.

If you would like to learn more about inflammation and anti inflammatory diets, (note, they are all different because WE are all different and one diet isn’t perfect for everyone), that can get you on track, here is a list of some of my favourites:

  1. Clean Eats by Alejandro Junger, MD
  2. Healing Foods
  3. Joyous Health by Joy McCarthy, CHHC
  4. Living Candida Free by Ricki Heller
  5. Crazy Sexy Diet by Kris Carr
  6. Whole Foods To Thrive by Brendan Brazier
  7. I Quit Sugar by Sarah Wilson
  8. Got Milked? By Alissa Hamilton
  9. Brain Maker by David Perlmutler MD
  10. Kitchen Cures by Peggy Kotsopoulos
  11. The Clear Skin Diet by Alan C. Logan ND. And Valori Trelor, CNS (***yes, acne is a form of inflammation and can be reduced or even corrected by diet alone, I had my teenager read this one)

Before signing off, I want you to know I completely understand how difficult it is to change your diet. This is especially difficult when you are mom and everyone in the house has different likes, dislikes, perhaps food allergies and preferences. Grabbing and going these days seems like it’s all we have, but start small. Plan ahead. Make healthier muffins and cookies. Use the slow cooker. And really mind your breakfast and lunch! As a mom, I know that the two meals I have the most control over is my breaky and lunch.

When I am eating cleaner, (or even cleansing), I simply fill those meals with smoothies!

Here are three of my favourite smoothies to keep you full and energetic:

Back to school! 5 ways our family uses essential oils to prepare for the busy season:o)

Well, it’s that time of year again…back to routine, activities, lunch making!

If you are anything like our family, it’s been a Summer full of late night sleepovers, last minute, not so healthy meals, and no routine at all.

This year, we are determined to be a little more organized before first day back, so we’ve actually finished shopping, have been trying to go to bed a little earlier and get up a tiny bit earlier too.

I know everyone and their dog has been putting out blogs on “back to school with essential oils”, so the information out there is endless, (and quite helpful), but I wanted to add our list of oil tips to help prepare you for the new school year.

  1. Hand cleanser. I noticed my kiddos did not have any anti-bacterial wipes or hand sanitizers on their lists this year, (which is a very cool thing). I do like making sure they do have hand cleanser for when the viruses and bacterial infections start circulating. Yes, we’ve taught them to wash with regular soap and water, but as a back up, we make our own hand cleanser. Super easy, you need: a small travel container from the dollar store, 1/4-1/2 cup pure aloe vera, 1 tsp vitamin E, and 20 drops OnGuard or Thieves essential oil blend. If you don’t have these, lemon, clove and rosemary will do too!
  2. Rollerballs for anxiety or nervousness. Rollerballs are convenient, safe and easy to apply for kids. If you have a child that suffers from anxiety, ADHD, or are just nervous about going back to school, this next rollerball is an essential. You simply need: 1, 10ml rollerball. 10 drops vetiver, 5 drops lavender. 5 drops orange or tangerine essential oils. Top off with fractionated coconut oil.
  3. Rollerball for concentration. InTune from doTERRA is a great blend for this, or make your own: 10 drops basil, 7 drops rosemary, 3 drops black pepper, 3 drops bergamot and top off with fractionated coconut oil in a 10 ml rollerball.
  4. Spray for stinky gear. Having a few bottles of OnGuard spray for things like hockey, soccer, football gear is a wise idea! All my boys get a fresh bottle at the beginning of every season:) To make your own bottle, you need:  20 drops OnGuard essential oil blend, (lemon and clove would work too), 1 tsp epsom salts, 1 tsp witch hazel or vodka, top off with distilled water in a 2 oz glass spray bottle
  5. Nightly bedtime routine is key. Each one of my kids has a diffuser and a favourite blend they diffuse at night. We get a little slack in the Summer, but during the school year, it’s almost as important as brushing their teeth at night. A super safe, very relaxing diffusing blend for any child: lavender, Roman chamomile and wild orange. However, my one boy’s favourite: Frankincense, lavender and tangerine. The other must is a massage oil on the bottom of their feet. Cedarwood and lavender is beautiful! I make sure every kiddo, (even the big ones) has a small mason jar of solid coconut oil blended with the lavender and cedarwood, so they can apply a tsp of the blend on their feet before bedtime. IF THEY ARE LUCKY AND REALLY GOOD…I MIGHT JUST DO IT FOR THEM! 🙂

So, that’s just a list to get you started!! There are many other wonderful mom blogs there with helpful advise too:) Just make sure the oils you are using for the really small kidlets are safe and diluted appropriately.

AND…if you are super interested in learning and implementing essential oils safely and more effectively in your life…I’d love to connect!! CHEERS TO YOU!! And here’s to another productive, healthy new school year.:o)

Aromatherapy and Your Practice. A 2 hour introductory workshop exploring the powerful synergy of yoga and essential oils.

I am so excited you are interested in joining me to learn more about how essential oils can be integrated into your practice!! This workshop is for the beginner to the advanced yogi…so basically everyone is welcome to attend:)

When?

September 15, 9:30-11:30

I will guide you through the basics of essential oils combined with a gentle Hatha practice on Deanne Vanvolkingburgh-Smith’s acreage just 5 minutes out of town…in the YURT.

What’s a yurt???

Yurts and circular-tents like them have housed people in Central and East Asia for thousands of years. The portability and easy assembly of their homes was, and continues to be, crucial for nomadic communities. This tradition is indeed what give yurts their true beauty. And nothing short of the quintessential structure that represents natural harmony and living lightly on the earth.

Why practice in a yurt?

The beautiful circular space, natural beauty and sense of comfort provides the perfect surroundings for deep and peaceful focus and relaxation.

And so…Deanne and I are beyond excited to share a very special experience with you:

The powerful synergy of yoga, essential oils and your practice in the beauty of the yurt situated on a peaceful property only minutes out of Grande Prairie.

During the 2 hour session, we will be exploring:

  • The benefits of practicing yoga with essential oils
  • Safety to using plant essence in your practice
  • 2 key breathing techniques
  • The benefits (and a little bit of the science) of blending essential oils and meditation (centering & savasana)
  • How to make your own grounding spray

Adding essential oils to your yoga practice will accelerate or enhance your ability to overcome the mind though the body. Historically, oils have been used to aid in meditation that brings us to the present moment. By combining oils and yoga, I am hoping to bring the two disciplines together to heighten the impact for every one of you.

If you love the two hour workshop, and would like to join me for an in depth 6 week series, I have put together an entire series to run this Fall!

Please CLICK HERE for more details on the registered series (runs from Friday, Sept. 22-Oct. 27), (space is very limited).

To register for the 2 hour workshop only…please CLICK HERE.
